Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is really just looking at the way you think and the things you do as places to implement changes that you would like in your emotional life, or in your life as a whole.

CBT is a very popular therapy at the moment. The major reason for this is that a lot of large scale, well-controlled research has shown that CBT is an effective way to change things for the better; things like depression and anxiety, chronic pain, panic attacks, post-trauma problems and relationship issues.

Because of this body of scientific research, CBT is an evidence-based psychological intervention. We can be confident when we use CBT in the right way for the right problem that it will have a beneficial effect.

CBT is also a short term therapy. Some problems can be greatly helped with just a few sessions. Most problems can be addressed effectively in less than 15 sessions.

The main reason for needing only a small number of sessions is twofold:

1. Although your psychologist does need to know some of your life history and information about your current life, CBT does not focus on analysing the past in detail. The focus is on the present and the future.

2. You will be given homework to do between sessions, so that you will be working on the problem you want to solve, not just for one hour every week, but throughout the week. If you want things to change, you have to implement changes into your life, not just talk about how bad things are.
